Apical Pinching of Zinnia Plants Increases Productivity and Quality of Stem Flowers

Abstract

Zinnia elegans is an ornamental species of multiple purposes of ornamentation. In recent times the potential of using these plants as cut flower has been studied, however, few studies are that determine their production in the field. One of the techniques used to obtain plants in the field with the greatest number of flowers is the apical shoot, which aims to promote the laterals prouting of branches and increase the number of flowers produced. Therefore, this work aimed to evaluate the effects of the apical blight applied in the culture, aiming a production with higher yield and quality of floral stems. The plants produced from seed germination and seedlings were transplanted, at 21 days after sowing, to the beds in spacing 20x20cm. At 15 days after transplanting, the apical emergence consisted of the treatments, being characterized as follows: T0: Control (without apical blight); T1: Sharp maintaining a gem; and T2: Sharp maintaining 2 gems. The experiment was carried out in fields under natural conditions at the field level. A completely randomized design was used, with three treatments distributed in 4 experimental plots being evaluated 8 replications, being the repetition composed by one plant. At the end of the production cycle, the height of the plant, the fresh weight of the plant, the number of leaves, the number of inflorescences, the length of the flower stems, the diameter of the inflorescences and the crop cycle were evaluated. Based on the results, it can be concluded that it is advisable to carryout zinnia pruning, maintaining 2 buds to increase productivity and quality of flower stems.
