Abstract

The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of different proportions of aqueous extract of Bauhinia forficata L. on the physiological germination process and the enzymatic activity of bean seeds during germination. The treatments were composed of proportions 0 (water); 2.5; 5; 7.5 and 10% (dried leaves of B. forficata) and by the hours of imbibition of the seeds. The design was completely randomized with a double factor. Germination, germination rate index, mean germination time, allelopathic index (RI), superoxide dismutase enzyme activity, catalase and peroxidase were evaluated. The germination rate index and the mean germination time as well as the allelopathic index were negatively affected as the extract ratios were increased. We observed that in the cotyledons of the bean seeds the beginning of the imbibition showed activity of the enzymes evaluated higher than the values found at the end of the germination process, whereas in the embryonic axis the highest values were verified at the end of the germination process. The increase of the extract proportions of the leaves of B. forficata affected the enzymatic activities in the germination process of the bean seeds resulting in a delay of the germination.
