Abstract

There is a lot of evidence to show that changes in the climate system and the consequent increase in temperature on Earth observed in the last decades are caused by the increase of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. These changes in the climate system have generated negative impacts on biological, agricultural and human systems and pose risks to different sectors and regions. The way to manage these risks is through actions of adaptation and mitigation to the changes in the climate. Adaptation actions are local and vary by location and region, as well as culture and population and / or country development. Mitigation actions should be focused on reducing GHG emissions, mainly focused on innovations that show increased energy efficiency and carbon capture and storage technologies, since net emissions of zero or negative greenhouse gases are needed to contain the increase to satisfactory levels. This paper presents a general and updated overview of the changes in the climate system, evaluating the main scientific literature on the subject, as well as critically analyzing the latest actions of the world governments regarding mitigation actions, impacts and perspectives.
