The article aims to present the outlines of the cultural historian of thought and essayist Antonio Jose Saraiva about the relationship between Western culture and the primacy of technological civilization, reflecting on the idea of progress, philosophy of history, the relationship between modern art and the nature, or even the concept and culture technology. It is important to highlight the influence exerted by cultural Marxism and, in particular, by the Marcuse theses. The singularity of Saraiva's thought lies in combining certain ideas of Marcuse and studying a certain conception of national culture. At first, we try to demonstrate how the author understands the ideology of progress, first and foremost in how it gains prominence in modernity; in a second moment, we intend to understand the possible relations between culture and technology. Briefly, the critique of technological modernity assumes certain features in the course of the thought and work of the author under study.
