DENTAL TREATMENT OF A PACIENT WITH SCHIZOPHRENIA AND OTHER COMORBITIES: A CLINICAL REPORT

Abstract

Schizophrenia is a syndrome that involves psychopathological manifestations of perception, thought, movement, emotion and behavior, being quite prevalent in society. The objective of the work was to present a clinical case report of a schizophrenic patient with severe mental retardation, epilepsy, delayed neuropsychomotor development and psychomotor agitation that presented at the Dental Teaching Hospital (HEO) of the Faculty of Dentistry of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) for routine consultation. Always at the beginning of each consultation, it was necessary for the patient to perform repetitive compulsive habits that she did at home. Clinical examination revealed the presence of periodontal disease and active cavities, which were subsequently treated through atraumatic restorative treatment (ART), in addition to professional prophylaxis, supragingival scraping, application of 1% chlorhexidine gel, directed oral hygiene instructions. to your caregivers and periodic annual maintenance. It was concluded that schizophrenia manifests itself in different ways in each person and that, in the case reported, understanding the importance of the presence and collaboration of the caregiver was essential for the success of the treatment, as well as the knowledge and sensitivity of the professionals who were at the forefront of the case.
