Abstract

Objective: Perform a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of different organic solvents in the dissolution of MTA Fillapex endodontic sealer. Methods: Twenty-eight specimens of this sealer were made, four for each solvent to be tested. Solvents used were chloroform, xylol, eucalyptol, citrol, endosolv E and endosolv R. Four specimens were kept in distilled water (control group). The weight loss of each specimen, expressed as the percentage of the final mass compared to the initial mass, determined the solubility of MTA Fillapex against the different solvents analyzed. Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the average solubility of these solvents. Results: Endosolv R (0.0065), citrol (0.0072) and eucalyptol (0.0077) resulted in similar solubility (p> 0.05), but distinct (p <0, 05) of the others and smaller than those obtained for xylol (0.0132), chloroform (0.0168) and endosolv E (0.0186). These last were similar (p> 0.05). Conclusions: All organic solvents tested presented dissolution capacity of MTA Fillapex, and xylol, chloroform and endosolv E were the most effective.
