Abstract

Introduction: Smoking is recognized as a major public health problem. Considered one of the main risk factors for chronic non-infectious diseases, smoking is also responsible for major expenses with hospitalizations, medications and decreased productivity. In view of this situation, the Health Ministry, in conjunction with the National Institute of Cancer (INCA), launched in 1986 the National Program of Smoking Control (PNCT). In order to achieve these objectives, treatment for smoking cessation, education and informative programs were promoted in the public health units. Considering that Primary Health Care is the main gateway to the Health Care Network, the involvement of these institutions in tobacco control actions is essential. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a smoking cessation group implanted in a basic health unit in the municipality of Anápolis - GO. Metodology: Prospective, experimental study on the effect of an intervention (smoking cessation group) on a population in the municipality of Anápolis-GO. Results: After analyzing the data, there was a rate of 60% of abstinent patients 12 months after the end of treatment. Conclusion: Primary Health Care has a fundamental role in actions to encourage smoking cessation. This study hopes to inspire Primary Care professionals to implement the Smoking Cessation Program in their Units, aiming at important results to promote a positive impact on the population's health.
