Abstract

The National Immunization Program (NIP)** was a huge achievement to Brazil that, even with a short time after its approval, got to eradicate the smallpox. Over the years, the program was expanded and with it eradicating more diseases, like measles, however, in 2018 it returned to circulation in the Brazilian territory. One of the factors responsible for the return was the anti-vaccination movement that was growing at the time, which gained strength after the publication of a fraudulent study by Andrew Wakefield, which presented that the vaccine was directly related to serious side effects in children. In addition to that was the high rate of immigrants from countries that did not have a broad immunization system. The factors mentioned above, along with other problems, contributed to the resumption of several other diseases, such as tuberculosis and polio, which both of them have vaccines and are offered by the Unified Health System throughout the country, but which for some reasons are no longer being taken
